At IAA 2017 in Frankfurt, choosing your own visitor program can be difficult. We’ve picked the automated driving events that you should definitely include in your tour.

In 2017, the automotive industry finds itself at a crossroads – perfectly illustrated by this year’s International Motor Show in Frankfurt. Once again, all large carmakers will showcase their latest SUVs, diesel engines and sports cars. At the same time, future technologies like autonomous, connected and electric driving currently only exist as a “support act” at the show – where concepts and prototypes like these are revealed. But there’s only so long “future mobility” can stay as an exhibition though, before that very future arrives. So in 2019, expect the IAA to look considerably different.

But make no mistake, these technologies are already taking in more room this year, with the New Mobility World, the IAA’s innovation platform, now awarded a more central spot this year. We have selected six automated driving highlights you shouldn’t miss!

  1. Demonstration area “New Mobility World Parcours”
  2. Smart EQ: Daimler’s ride-sharing vision
  3. The New Mobility World: Facebook enters the automotive game
  4. NMW Lab 17: the start-up challenge
  5. Radically new interior concepts
  6. 2025AD at IAA: “Your own AD car edition” and panel discussion on ethics of AD

Demonstration area “New Mobility World Parcours”

What? Experience automated and intelligent driving live: large exhibitors like Audi, Bosch, Daimler, Continental, Volkswagen and ZF Friedrichshafen showcase current technology trends like autonomous driving and braking, trained parking or smart image recognition. It’s also a smooth way to snap some fresh air: the parcours consists of an indoor as well as an outdoor area.

When? Thursday, September 14 – Sunday, September 17

Outdoor parcours: “AGORA” open space

Smart EQ: Daimler’s ride-sharing vision

The Smart EQ: the most radical car sharing concept? (Photo: Daimler)

What? Daimler certainly made a bold promise when they announced their latest Smart concept vehicle as “the most radical car sharing concept car of all: fully autonomous, with maximum communication capabilities, friendly, comprehensively personalisable and, of course, electric." Whether the Smart EQ fortwo lives up to this expectations remains to be seen – but it certainly looks like the most intriguing autonomous concept car being introduced at IAA. According to Daimler, the vehicle is able to find and collect passengers directly from their chosen location. Daimler also claims that a large number of digital surfaces both inside and outside will allow “a new level of communication between human and automobile."

The New Mobility World: Facebook enters the automotive game

What? It’s Facebook’s debut to the world of connected and automated driving: the world’s leading social network will co-host this year’s New Mobility World (NMW). Facebook’s COO Sheryl Sandberg will be at the trade fair to debate topics like artificial intelligence, machine learning or virtual and augmented reality – fields with large overlaps to driverless mobility. Not much has leaked yet of how the company will present itself at NMW – but it will be exciting to see whether Facebook will be the next Silicon Valley company to enter the driverless car race.

NMW Lab 17: the start-up challenge

What? Chosen out of 150 applications, ten international start-ups will present their business vision for the mobility of tomorrow. Among the finalists are teams from the USA, Germany, France and Israel, pitching innovative solutions to a broad variety of topics – be it logistics automation, image recognition, technology platforms or autonomous mobility. The event will take place on two days, with five start-ups competing in a “freshmen” final and the other five in a “senior” final. A high-caliber jury made up of investors, journalists and mobility experts will choose the winners.

When?
“Freshmen” final: Thursday, September 14, 5.15 PM – 6.30 PM
“Senior” final: Friday, September 14, 5.15 PM – 6.30 PM

Radically new interior concepts

What? One of the hottest topics in automated driving right now: the transformation of the interior once vehicles are driverless. No wonder this is also one of exhibitors’ focus at IAA. Yanfeng Automotive Interiors will unveil eXperience in Motion (XiM18), an autonomous interior concept that they claim turns the car into the „next living space“. According to Yanfeng, XiM18 features more than 30 product innovations that will redefine “the way people can relax, work and play in their car today and decades from now.”

Irish supplier Adient will showcase what autonomous and shared driving will mean for vehicle seating. The company will present five seating modes for different use cases: Lounge, Communication, Cargo, Baby Plus and Family modes – reflecting the manifold options self-driving cars will offer to use your time gained.
